Moon Rituals: How to Work With the Lunar Cycle for Intention, Healing & Flow

lunar living full moon

Have you ever had one of those seasons where everything just clicks into place – where life feels in flow and the universe seems to whisper, “You’re on the right path”? Working with the moon can be a powerful way to reconnect with that rhythm. In this post, we explore how each of the four lunar phases offers a moment to pause, reflect and reconnect with yourself.

What are moon rituals?

Living by the moon means aligning yourself with nature’s rhythm. The moon governs tides, cycles and energy – and just like the ocean, our emotions, sleep and intuition are influenced by it too.

When we work with the moon, we create space for regular check-ins, helping us refocus and reconnect with ourselves. It becomes a ritual – a rhythm – a practice in remembering who we are and where we want to go.

New Moon – a fresh start and intention setting

Energy: Stillness, visioning, manifestation

Journal prompts:

  • What do I want to bring into my life this month?
  • How have I been feeling lately?
  • What small steps will move me closer to where I want to be?

Ritual ideas:

  • Light a candle, speak your intentions aloud and visualise your goal
  • Write affirmations or sketch out your vision
  • Use a sage smudge stick to cleanse your space
  • Pull an oracle card to guide your direction

This is the perfect time to plant metaphorical seeds. Let your intentions be rooted in truth and aligned with your values.

Waxing Moon – momentum and action

Energy: Growth, commitment, discipline

As the moon grows, so does your energy. This two-week window is ideal for taking action toward your new moon intentions.

Ideas:

  • Revisit your journal
  • Track small wins
  • Stay connected to your “why”
  • Take inspired steps toward your vision

It’s not about perfection – it’s about progress.

Full Moon – release and reflection

Energy: Illumination, emotion, letting go

Journal prompts:

  • What’s come to light this month?
  • What am I ready to release?
  • What (or who) is no longer serving my growth?

Ritual ideas:

  • Try a full moon burning ceremony (safely)
  • Write down what you’re letting go of and burn the paper
  • Breathe deeply, hand on heart and visualise release

This is the halfway point in the lunar cycle – a time of heightened emotion, celebration and surrender.

Waning Moon – rest, reset and integration

Energy: Slowing down, healing, preparing for the next cycle

The moon begins to shrink, and so should our pace. This is the time to wind down, reflect on lessons learned, and make space for rest.

Ideas:

  • Practice gentle movement
  • Journal freely
  • Say no to what drains you
  • Honour your body’s needs

This phase reminds us that rest is productive. You’re not falling behind – you’re recalibrating.

The Moon & the Zodiac

The moon moves through all 12 zodiac signs roughly every 2–3 days. Each sign adds a unique energy to the lunar cycle:

New moon: same zodiac as the sun

Full moon: always in the opposite sign of the sun

Understanding this dance deepens your practice. Lunar Living by Kirsty Gallagher is an excellent guide for tuning into the zodiac energies of each new and full moon.

Final thought

As Roald Dahl wrote in The Minpins:

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”

The moon reminds us that magic isn’t lost – we just have to look up.
